RSS ideas for news sites

How about using RSS to deliver classified and calendar listings? Or even personalized news feeds based on keywords and favorite columnists?)

Sites likes LISJobs.com, Pickajob.com and RSSJobs.com are already distributing job feeds via RSS.

Maybe journalismjobs.com should get on the RSS bandwagon, too.

We've been running some experiments with RSS from classifieds and calendar. Very easy to do.
We've also been tracking this on our corporate blog.

Tony Gentile over at the
API MediaCenter (http://mediacenter.blogs.com/morph/2005/01/this_disruption.html) has this little stomach-turning post.

"Imagine Blogger or TypePad not in the hands of a blogger, PR
flak or journalist... but in the hands of a recruiter, real
estate agent or used car salesmen. ... Rather than paying
hundreds of dollars to list a job (house, car, etc) at Monster,
CareerBuilder or HotJobs, employers (i.e., companies,
recruiters, etc) can simply publish their openings (for free)
as Feeds and immediately make them available to a worldwide
audience, who can conveniently subscribe to them directly (or
via the aforementioned searchable aggregated database)."

As he points out: "The database already exists (at least for
recruitment classifieds) at http://www.Indeed.com and http://jobs.feedster.com and the UI
for publishing will follow soon. More listing categories will
emerge in 2005."

On a related note, most of the news uses of RSS have to do with distribution channels.

Are there any sites out there (run by the MSM) that aggregate RSS feeds the way that Greensboro101.com does?

Wired News provides RSS feeds for searches, so you can have your aggregator watch the site for new stories on a topic.

Yahoo News Search will let you save a search as an RSS feed, too. Topix.net is essentially aggregating RSS feeds as well (together with some screen-scraping).

We have all sorts of event RSS on lawrence.com, our local entertainment site. See http://www.lawrence.com/rss/ for full info.

We also recently launched persistent search, a la Google News alerts, but it's better than Google News alerts in that you can select which "type" of information you want to be alerted about -- bands, events, albums, stories, etc. You can also get an RSS feed for your custom search results, in addition to being notified via e-mail or SMS. See http://www.lawrence.com/searchalerts/create/.

In addition to highlighting job listings on the main site and in the daily newsletter, we have a separate RSS feed for the Digital Media Jobs Blog. http://www.paidcontent.org/jobs/

Nice tip! Btw, there's a neat tool I use very often called Feedity ( www.feedity.com ) that let's you create a RSS feed from any webpage. It comes quite handy!
