Most of the 1,400+ daily newspapers in the United States continue to offer their content on their Web sites for free. Here's a list of the more than 35 newspapers that charge for access.

The News-Gazette, Champaign, Illinois, has charged for access to its college sports content since December 1996. The online version replaced a daily fax of such material.
The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch charges for most stories. It's free for print subscribers; 4.95 per month for others

The worlds leading newspapers will continue to offer superior websites that will still deliver excellent news at no charge to the end. As in print, it's going to be some of the "local rags" and "rinky dink" operations that suffer. The consumer friendly, big media companies will win.

Add The Anniston Star to this list. The site has been subscriber supported since August 2002. Online subscriptions represent about 3 percent of print circulation. The site is ABC compliant.

The Watertown Times (Watertown,New York) and The Post Star (Glens Falls, New York) also charge for their online services.
