Baby 'Name Voyager'

Poynter's Al Tompkins and Kelly McBride point out this very cool interactive Web site illustrating the popularity of baby names over time:

The Name Voyager site called BabyNameWizard.com uses JAVA to map the popularity of baby names over time. The popularity of a name is represented by the thickness of its name "stripe." Mouse over a stripe to highlight it and see its shape clearly. Enter a name to see its popularity over the last 100 years.... The site explains: "The NameVoyager tracks names of babies born in the Unites States, as reported by the Social Security Administration (SSA). We have cleansed the raw SSA data, corrected errors and performed statistical transformations to allow meaningful historical comparisons."

Excellent example of what you can do when you combine interactivity with databases.
