washingtonpost.com redesigns front

Continuing a trend on news sites, washingtonpost.com launched a new home page today that drops the left navigation in favor of a top navigation bar with drop-down menus. The move gives the site more room to display headlines and features and makes the site look less cluttered.

"The design change was in response to research that showed a strong preference for a single navigational tool. Testers in that study rated the site higher in ease of use, finding content and overall site quality when using top navigation only," a press release said. "Users were also more likely to view the full home page in the absence of left navigation."

In addition, the site switched to a three-column layout at the bottom of the page to create more room for headlines; and the page weight is smaller, enabling it to download faster.
