To integrate online news or not?
An online news editor writes in asking about structures for newsroom/web efforts, specifically whether it's more effective to have the Web fall under the newsroom umbrella or work outside of it in a seperate unit or department. If you have any opinions or advice on this (and you know you do!) and the challenges involved, please post them here.

1 comments about 'To integrate online news or not?'I think it all depends on management's vision. That depends a lot on the people in management, and a lot on the corporate parent (if there is one). What if there's no corporate parent? Hmmm, I'm curious if the (few) independent papers out there handle the web much different than the majority ...
Back to your question. Web separation from print allows more editorial independence. Putting web and print together, well, I don't know. It seems like it would foster unity, but I get the feeling that most print divisions have little idea what happens with their online partner, pretty much across the board ... okay, now I'm rambling ...
Also, Jonathan -- why leave people's emails out here in the internet to get harvested by spammers? Isn't there something you or the folks at Media Center can do about this??
