Google begins accepting videos, sets up payment model for owners

Google has begun letting anyone who wants to upload video to its new video search for free -- and has developed a model where people will get paid if users watch their video.

"We're accepting digital video files of any length and size. Simply sign up for an account and upload your videos using our Video Uploader (please be sure you own the rights to the works you upload), and, pending our approval process and the launch of this new service, we'll include your video in Google Video, where users will be able to search, preview, purchase and play it....

"As the content owner, you decide whether you'd like to give away your video for free or charge a price that you set for it. If you do charge a price, Google will take a small revenue share to cover some of our costs....

"You can name any price for your video, which can be done from your Add/Edit Video Information page. The price you choose completely depends on you and your distribution goals.

"We suggest that you choose a fair price that you think users will pay to view your video content. Because you can change the price at any time, experiment and see what price brings you the most success. You can also set the price to zero and allow users to access and play your video for free. This will potentially give you wider distribution than those who choose to charge a price."

How would the videos be organised so that searches on the video database were profitable.

If it takes 10 hours to find 5 minutes of video that is useful then I can't see Google's new business idea working.
