Spokesman-Review's 'Transparent Newsroom' blog and Webcast

SpokesmanReview.com has launched a new 'Daily Briefing' blog as part of a new "Transparent Newsrooom" initiative that will eventually lead to Webcasting the daily editorial meetings!

The point of the blog is to help involve readers in the daily editorial decision making process. The blog is a summary of the morning and afternoon editorial staff meetings, touching on the main stories the newspaper is working on for the next day.

So far the blog is one-way, with no reader comments posted (though the option is there) -- though it will be interesting to see if readers start adding their thoughts and influencing the decision-making.

The blog didn't tip the newspaper's hand in its plans to publish the sex investigation of Spokane Mayor Jim West this week, though afterward it did mention the controversial decision to use an undercover computer expert to engage West online:

Editor Steve Smith has been vigorously defending the decision. "In the end, there's no other way," he said. One alternative - confronting West directly - would have compromised our ability to confirm his online activity. Another - using one of our sources to chat with West online - would have been even more ethically suspect, Smith said.

The site has even bigger plans: It is preparing to Webcast its editorial meetings. And it's also planning to host a blog with five citizens who will review our newspaper in a column meant to do justice to Jeff Jarvis' famous line, "News is a Conversation."

Online publisher Ken says says the site is also working on a "Spokane vortex" blog which would be "a fun look at all of the weird and wonderful ways in which Spokane gets mentioned in odd places on the web, in the news and on TV...

"All of this," he says, "combined with our year-old "Ask the Editors" column, will be under an umbrella called "Transparent Newsroom."
