nytimes.com redesigns story pages
The New York Times recently redesigned some of the article pages on nytimes.com. "We hope that the changes make our pages load faster, improve our navigation, and simplify our design," spokesman Kathy Parks tells CyberJournalist.net. "You'll notice roomier text spacing, new layouts, and new navigation options on individual article pages."
Changes include:
- New "Go to Section" navigation drops down when you mouse over it,
offering links to all the top level sections. Divided alphabetically
under News, Features, Opinion, Classifieds.
- Most E-mailed Articles module: now you can toggle between lists for
Past 24 Hours and Past 7 Days.
-The Top Five Most E-mailed articles appears on each page so that
readers get a sampling of the articles that other readers are interested in, without leaving the page.
- The article page now expands to fit the width of your screen.
- The design of the page is fully controlled through stylesheets, making the page much cleaner, simpler and quicker to load.
- Improved accessibility for screen reader applications.
- Older, classic Web browsers will now be served a simplified page
layout allowing the basic content to be readable. Upgrading to a more
recent browser is recommended for the best viewing experience.
- The article inline area (or "sidebar") has been moved to the left side of the screen, separated from the advertising column on the right.
- Larger, easier-to-click page numbers for split pages.
- Breaking News alerts now available at the article level (they will
show up above the headline).
- Added promotional images for editorial features at the bottom of the
page.
- Added Help link to Welcome/Log In area, and Contact Us link in footer.
- New positions to the same basic ad sizes, including prominent placement for half-page and skycraper ads on the right side of the screen and a location for horizontal ads between two of the new navigation elements.
