BBC fellowship honors Web writer

The BBC News website has launched a new fellowship for journalists to honor a science and technology reporter who died of a brain tumour.

Ivan Noble, who died January at the age of 37 after a two-year battle with cancer, kept a diary of his battle with cancer on the site.

The fellowship, or bursory, will enable a journalist with less than two years' experience to work on BBC.co.uk's science and technology desk.

"When Ivan died many readers asked what we would do as a lasting tribute to him," said Pete Clifton, editor of BBC News Interactive. "We think the bursary is a fitting thing to do - we want to encourage a new journalist with the same passion for science and technology that Ivan had."

Noble's tumour diary was a regular feature on the site from September 2002 to the last entry on the day he died, on Jan. 31, 2005. The diary followed his battle through remissions and relapses and provoked thousands of e-mails of support and tribute.

You can read the diary, which is being published as a book, on the BBC's site here.
