latimes.com launches Wiki

The Los Angeles Times launched the first Wiki on a major news site Friday, allowing readers to edit and rewrite an editorial.

Editorial and Opinion Editor Michael Kinsley called the first day of the bold experiment a success. "I'm loving it," he told Editor & Publisher. "I was worried that no one would come."

One person rewrote the headline to include a profanity, while another user split the editorial into two.

Kinsey said that, despite the defacement, "the ratio of assholes to good-will people" is not as high as he had feared.

And he added, "I think splitting the editorial was brilliant."

Kinsley said the profanity incident raised a good question about how much editors want to filter postings. "We are going to filter it very lightly," he said. "We want to keep hands off, but we don't want a lot of offensive words or extremely offensive ideas."
