MyPI integrates personalization
Many news sites have tried building personalized "My" subsites, where users could build a page of their favorite content from the publication. But generally they don't work, because people don't use them.
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has taken the concept and integrated it into every page on the Web site.
Users can customize up to seven modules that will then appear on every page of the site in the right column.
According to Editor & Publisher, Mike Thompson, the PI's online developer, implemented the feature in about three or four weeks.

2 comments about 'MyPI integrates personalization'The feature did take 3-4 weeks, but that also included adding RSS feeds for every module that didn't have one and having our CMS handle it all (before, it was a separate process).
Your point about people not always using the "my" products is why I tried a couple things differently. We picked default modules (top AP, most read/printed/emailed) because they often include some rather interesting headlines. So even if people don't personlize it, there is still a good chance they might use the feature.
We also hoped to entice the one-stop-shoppers (people following a link to our site) to stick around a little longer.
We'll see if the feature catches on. If it does, it not only will increase page views but also has the possibility of creating some very targeted advertising opportunities.
