South African newspaper publisher to pay for citizens' submissions
The publisher of the Sunday Times, Sowetan, Sunday World, The Herald and Daily Dispatch in South Africa has launched a new citizens' media site, reporter.co.za.
“Reporter.co.za will be looking for fresh news, reviews, columns, features and community-orientated articles from members of the public in the form of stories, audio, images or video," the company said in a press release. "Contributors will have access to reporter.co.za’s virtual newsroom, where they will learn valuable tricks of the trade — a brilliant opportunity for people to publish their work with the guidance of experienced journalists.”
The site will pay contributors a nominal fee and if it’s a breaking news item, the story or photo could be published in the group’s print publications, with commensurate payment.
reporter.co.za is being led by a team of experienced journalists, including content editor Peter Malherbe, (who was the former managing editor of the Sunday Times) and Manu Padayachee, known for his work at M-Net and Carte Blanche. The newsroom also consists of about 20 multimedia journalists, who will guide contributors through the process of creating news.
