MediaShift: New PBS blog

PBS is set to launch a new blog on Jan. 18 called MediaShift, which will cover the digial media revolution and be written by Online Journalism Review columnist Mark Glaser.

MediaShift Features:

Blog
In-depth blog posts will include rotating features, such as: Q&A's with industry leaders, commentaries and substantive reporting on recent developments.

"The blog will be a lively read, entertaining and enthusiastic about new developments in the media landscape -- with a healthy dose of skepticism reserved for overly hyped initiatives with little substance," said Glaser.

Your Take
Each week, a different contention or question will be posed to MediaShift's readers, who will be invited to add their views or share relevant information. One example might be: "Do you trust Google News to be fair and accurate?" The question would also be posed to people with a vested interest in and/or particular knowledge of the subject, including people at news outlets, analysts and executives, and news consumers.

Top 5 Chart
This chart will list top companies, people and ideas that are gaining momentum or buzz in the new media world, including new initiatives or breakthrough services.

MediaShift Reading List
A running list of the best media-related books, blogs, sites and research reports, updated regularly.

Oh pleeeeease find another title for your blog spot besides MediaShift--it's so techno-cerebral it sounds like jargonese! Get something catchy--anything!

Yours truly,
Mary, mother of nine (but with three degrees too, so you have to listen to me)

Okay, let us begin with a discussion of how we pick presidents. It's a tad long, but if you stick with it, it gets there.

"How I choose presidents"
It is true Clinton's presidency was great in its economic and domestic achievement. But (not my terms) Slick Willy, the come back kid--the man who SUCCESSFULLY survived the WORST possible punishment a president can be given by another legislative branch (impeachment) virtually unscathed. Many would call this "political success" and deem it admirable. I would call it huge, great success, the shining glory momentum of a consummate politician's story, the climax. That speaks for Bill Clinton. His presidency was excellent in economic and domestic affairs, was only fair in foreign affairs. Its greatness lies in the presidenct's men--Clinton's choice of people. They were great thinkers and doers, all of them. As opposed to the evil Cheney, the tragic Rumsfeld, the egomaniac Wolfowitz, you had people like Robert Reich, George Stephanopolis, Madeleine Albright--and many, many more, all good, excellent people, the best; many of them still at work, thank goodness. So I credit Clinton with being a superb appointer of advisors. But this and his being the most successful politician to date, a consummate politician (no joke intended) are not enough for me. I would rather he had done more foreign alliances in the middle east, but rather think he lacked the ability to carry out truly strong programs for which he could not establish measures based on polls. I would rather have a president whose political genius was a far lesser force to martial his forces, than one whose character and intelligence rather than political savvy drove his decisions large and small. (Lyndon Johnson was also the most Consummate Politician, on par with Clinton, and his decision not to run was in truth a real kind of suicide for a politician to make--he possessed character as well.) I think Clinton truly was the "change agent" as he told people they might believe him to be. He allowed US to run his presidency (apart from picking people). I want my president to be able to pick people as well as Clinton did, but not to speak clearly just to the masses, as Clinton did (and I think Hillary would, if she were chosen), but to speak from his or her own self--which Clinton strangely lacked in my perception, always being the voice or agent of change without really envisioning it himself. He was the great supporter and voicebox for the people he chose to advise him--including, most especially, Hillary whom he no doubt really loves. I want my president to be articulate to ME, not just to the masses, but voicing and envisioning government in harmonious relation to the needs of all its governed from HIS OWN MIND AND SOUL. Because, when it is so, as in the case of Lincoln, and Jefferson and Teddy Roosevelt, and Truman, and Carter, there is a better chance for it to succeed. I want my president to AUTHOR his ideas, not just receive them from others, however brilliant the others, and only dress them up or edit them. My president would be able to write and edit his own Gettysburg address. Now, that I see in John Edwards and John McCain, and potentially in Barack Obama, but not in Hilliary.
