Journalist plagiarizes from Wikipedia
The Honolulu Star-Bulletin fired entertainment reporter Tim Ryan after an investigation determined he had plagiarized from Wikipedia.
Editor Frank Bridgewater said Ryan's stories contained phrases or sentences that appeared elsewhere before being included, unattributed, in stories that ran in the Star-Bulletin.
A correction or editor's note has been added online at starbulletin.com to six of Ryan's stories. (Kudos to the newspaper for amended the stories online rather than just letting them sit there.)
The plagiarism was spotted by Wikipedia editors, who noticed that language used in one of Ryan’s stories about Aloha Flight 243 closely matched a Wikipedia article, according to The Inquirer. He was spotted because the person who wrote the Wikipedia entry came across Ryan’s story on news aggregator Fark.com.
