Ottawa Citizen medical convergence project

The Ottawa Citizen published an interesting convergence project recently.

The Citizen's Ruth Dunley tells CyberJournalist.net:

With the tremendous popularity of television medical dramas (Grey's Anatomy etc.), we decided to see if we could translate that public interest into an educational newspaper/web project. In partnership with our local hospitals and med school, we were given extraordinary access to six residents (all in different areas of medicine) so that we could better explain to readers what it actually takes to become a doctor today. Two of our reporters and photographers followed the residents for two weeks, literally around the clock. We got spectacular photographs and wonderful stories from behind the scenes.

You can see the print series online, as well as a whole site dedicated to the series, with video diaries of each of the doctors and a blog (updated 6-8 times a day) by our featured pediatric resident and photo galleries of all the doctors in action. There are also several Flash features and a 360-degree tour of an operating room.

Readers are loving it, it helped us build bridges with the local hospitals and university, and it's the kind of project that could be done in any city. You can see the website for the series, The Residents: Medicine's Front Line, at http://www.canada.com/ottawacitizen/features/theresidentsl
