USA Today widens story pages

USAToday.com has redesigned its story pages to make them wider, borrowing from some of the design elements the site has already been using on its blog pages.

The changes will be rolled out gradually across the site over the next few days.

Executive Editor Kinsey Wilson says:

The new layout is wider, allowing for an improved display and better integration of text, photos and multimedia on the same page. We've consolidated search and site navigation at the top of the page. And we've established a clearer demarcation between editorial and advertising content.

The new design was guided by research and usability testing that showed the vast majority of our readers were using the higher screen resolutions (minimum 1024x768) that allow for wider display, and that most made little use of the left-hand navigation on our story pages. We've added a handy drop-down box at the upper left of our pages with shortcuts to help you navigate to a section's essential elements.
