Auto-converting news articles into podcasts
The Arizona Republic has set up a system to automatically convert newspaper articles into podcasts using text-to-speech technology.
PRESSTIME magazine, the flagship publication of the Newspaper Association of America, has honored the site for doing so with one of its annual Best Practices Awards:
The site’s chief technology guru wrote a program to bring azcentral.com’s text-based content to iPod users, the Web site signed on with a Pittsburgh-based speech-technology provider and found the voice of the newspaper’s podcasts (nicknamed “Diane”). The Web site’s in-house-designed publishing system was altered so that every time an article is published, the story is logged in a separate database. Every 15 minutes, the system looks for newly published stories and converts them into audio files. Users can sign up to download the audio files through Rich Site Summary (RSS) technology.
