State of the blogosphere

Technorati founder David Sifry ponders the state of the blogosphere and finds (once again) that it is strong. Among other tidbits: on average, one new blog is created every second of every day, and 55 percent of those bloggers continue posting past the three-month mark.

This is best description of the "state of the blogosphere" as described by the My Golden State blogger for the LA Times, Michael Hiltzlik:

"quacking lunatics agreeing with each other, punctuated by the occasional voice of reason."

Hiltzlik, by the way, has just been suspended by the Times for using a pseudonym when posting comments on others' blogs, as well as on his own.

What I think is there is a serious and growing disconnect between this new medium of expression and professional journalistic values, one that seriously threatens the role of journalists in society.
