Subject: A New Multimedia Editor for the Web Newsroom
We’re thrilled to announce the hiring of Andrew DeVigal as the new Multimedia Editor for the Web newsroom.
Andrew, a journalist, teacher, innovator and technical expert, will be a critical part of the integration of our online and print operations. He'll oversee a staff of multimedia producers and direct the presentation of audio, graphics and slide shows on the Web. With his expertise and focus, we intend to keep NYTimes.com at the forefront of innovation in using multimedia presentations to better help readers understand the news.
This position requires a diverse set of skills, and that's what Andrew brings:
*As a print journalist, Andrew worked in the graphics departments at The Contra Costa Times and The Chicago Tribune.
*As an online journalist, he was a designer and producer for The Tribune and for Knight Ridder's Web sites.
*As a teacher, he spent three years on the faculty of the Poynter Institute and for the past four years has been an assistant professor of journalism at San Francisco State University, where he taught online journalism and directed the online student newspaper.
*As a freelance designer, he has redesigned a number of Web sites, including those of Newsday, The Times Union in Albany and The Honolulu Advertiser. He's also the co-author of “Web Designers' Guide to Typography.”
*As an expert industry observer, he built the Web site Interactive Narratives (http://www.interactivenarratives.org), which tracks the best examples of online journalism and the technical innovations behind them. He also helped conduct the Poynter/Stanford “Eye-Tracking’’ study that looked at how readers use news Web sites.
At The Times, Andrew will work closely with the Web producers and designers, Lawrie Mifflin's video team, Steve Duenes and his graphics department, Michele McNally’s picture desk and all of the desks in the newsroom. He'll work on all manner of stories, from breaking news to enterprise and features, and he’ll be an invaluable guide in determining which of the many new tools to use in reporting and telling a story.
Please join us in welcoming Andrew to The Times.

To New York Times radio.
Your audio mixing continues "sub-pro":
Today's audio interview of Matt Wald by NYT radio editor Jane (?) concerning the fallen Minneapolis bridge carries Jane's lovely voice at a constantly up-and-down (hand-held mike?)audio level at an OVERALL marginal level. Wald's level quite even -- i.e.,acceptable! Again, IT'S THE MIX,.. it's unprofessional!
