Katrina survivors one year later
Check out the latest project from photographer Jennifer Warren, shot inside FEMA's trailer
parks in Louisiana. A collection of audio interviews and slideshows, 'FEMA's Chainlink Cities' gives a voice to displaced New Orleanians and present FEMA residents.
"One year later, thousands of New Orleans' residents are displaced around the country and around Louisiana," Warren says. "Still with nowhere to call home, Louisiana residents have little access to job training and placement, and feel a great deal of separation from family members, and hopelessness for how to rebuild their lives. These audio slideshows are first-person accounts of life inside FEMA’s secretive and poorly-managed emergency camps.
"Because of restrictions on journalists and residents, not enough of the American public is aware of living conditions inside the FEMA camps. Some have heard of Renaissance Village, the largest disaster camp in the state holding over 2,000 people, but many do not know of the other 4 sites right there in Baker - with more than 8,000 displaced New Orleans' residents overall between the 5."

Denny Taylor, with Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Taro Yamasaki, tell an emotional story of three sisters’ post-Katrina ordeal and their daily struggle to survive in the River Center Shelter in Baton Rouge. The tragedy of Katrina and substantial lack of resources at the shelter leave the physically handicapped and malnourished sisters without proper food, medical attention and even the simplest of toiletries.
