At the J-Lab Citizens Media Summit at the Online News Association conference, Jeremy Iggers, founder of TCDailyPlanet.com, says the goal was to create a local news web site for the Twin Cities – Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minn. It brings together the best work of more than 35 local and ethnic news organizations to cover undercovered communities, trigger new community alliances, and train citizens to participate and contribute to the news.
It's still a very small audience - around 11,000 unique visitors last month.
We're taking really good work that shows up in places people usually won't see... And putting it in a place where people in the Twin Cities can easily see it."
They haven't gotten concern that they are stealing traffic from partners because they're only taking a small percent of content and are linking back and thus driving traffic to them.
"We think it's a win-win."
Overheard in the audience: "It's amazing that the Star-Tribune didn't do this."
