'Wizard of Oz syndrome' of citizen media
At the J-Lab Citizens Media Summit at the Online News Association conference, Lisa Williams, the founder of H20Town.com, said that community sites can do a lot with just a few contributors.
To make her point, she cited that about half of Wikipedia's edits are done by .0072 percent of the users.
That means, she estimated, that only about 615 people are the core contributors to Wikipedia!
"What we have here is the Wizard of Oz syndrome. It looks really big and impressive but it's really just a little man behind the curtain."

It was during a talk at the Stanford Innovation Forum; I need to find the link...
