Reuters, Yahoo launch 'You Witness News'

In one of the largest efforts to tap users for "citizen journalism" by mainstream organizations, Yahoo and Reuters have partnered and launched a new effort to showcase photos and video from the public.

Photos and videos submitted will be posted on Reuters.com and Yahoo News. You can check out the submission pages on Reuters here and on Yahoo here. Yahoo is using Flickr, which it owns, for the photo uploading.

According to The New York Times
, Reuters said that it will distribute some of the submissions next year to the thousands of print, online and broadcast media outlets that subscribe to its news service. Reuters said it hoped to develop a service devoted entirely to user-submitted photographs and video.

Yahoo's site also offers great tips on shooting video from Yahoo! News reporter Kevin Sites.

It is good attempt that yahoo launches with Reuters the You Witness. This will benefit Yahoo and photographers/journalists for bringing out instances which may tell true events takes place around the world.

Yes, very generous of Yahoo and Reuters to host lots of content provided to them free! My question would be whether both these huge companies will monetise offerings from the public and share a slice of the action - even if it is only a percentage.

Sorry, hit enter by mistake. I meant to add that with regards to the iniative to support citiwen journalism by Reuters and Yahoo, these huge companies might want to spend some more time developing flickr ... as an "old skool" member I can no longer get into my account and every time I try to set up a new one the link fails. Perhaps less innovation is needed and more attention to basics would help make this effort towards supporting "journizens" really worthwhile. Forward!
