BBC launching user-generated TV show

BBC News 24 is launching a new TV program based entirely on user-generated content, called "Your News."

The new program will draw on the 10,000 emails the BBC News website gets from the public each day with story suggestions, comments and pictures from the public.

The program will include:

-Your Story – weekly news report unique to Your News covering an issue raised by a member of the public.

-Your Questions – Your News reporter Laura Jones sets out to investigate answers to the questions sent in to the BBC by the public on issues, local or national, that concern them;

-Your Pictures – images sent into the BBC from the public with their view of the world;

-Your Top Stories – that week's top stories on the BBC News website and elsewhere.

All material will be credited on-air to the member of the public who sent it in.

Kevin Bakhurst, Controller of BBC News 24, said: "Your News will make use of the huge range of material being sent in to the BBC by the public, some of which has already provided real newsgathering value.

"Your News will reflect the stories catching our audience's eye and talk to them directly about the issues they feel really matter."

Finally the BBC is developing something to make use of all pictures and videos that they receive. They've already worked alot to improve the comments section of their site, but this new project sounds really exciting. I wonder how it will all be filtered though.

Hear hear… Cyril

The BBC often comes in for criticism on these fronts, but I guess it has to play it safe, letting some ideas bed down, reach some form of critical mass within and outside the organiastion, before adopting them. So this is to be welcome.

Wouldn’t it be nice though if it went outside the corporation to find evangelists and architects within UGC to push the programme rather than just use in-house talent?

That’s not to say there’s not enough grey matter with the Beep, but you fancy it’s going to play it safe -BBC sensibilities - when what would be great from the organisation is also the new new thing.

p.s No I’m not a UGC expert.
