Health journalism awards deadline

Wednesday, Jan. 10, is the deadline to submit entries for the Awards for Excellence in Health Care Journalism. Note that online publications are eligible to enter these awards.

Don't miss this chance to have your work recognized in the only contest run by journalists that honors excellence in health care reporting. Unlike other contests sponsored by special-interest groups, the only organization backing this contest is AHCJ. Winners will be selected by a panel of judges made up of outstanding editors and reporters from around the country.

This is the time to dust off your best work from the year. AHCJ wants to honor those whose work goes beyond just reporting the latest findings from the medical journals or other news of the day. So submit that investigative piece you worked on for weeks, the feature story that moved readers to tears, the series that explained the normally confusing.

Entries may be submitted in nine categories:

* Large newspapers (over 250,000 circulation) and national wire services

* Medium newspapers (90,000 to 250,000)

* Small newspapers (under 90,000)

* General interest magazines above 1 million circulation

* General interest magazines below 1 million circulation

* Trade publications / Online journals / Newsletters

* TV (Top 20 markets, network, syndicated)

* TV (Below Top 20 markets)

* Radio

All work must have been published between Jan. 1, 2006, and Dec. 31, 2006.

First-place winners earn $500 and a framed certificate. First-place winners also will receive complimentary lodging for two nights and registration for the national conference, to be held March 15-18 in Los Angeles. First-place winners will be recognized at the conference.

Remember - entries must be postmarked by Jan. 10.

Entry fees are $40 for AHCJ members and $60 for nonmembers. Reporters may join the association now and benefit from the member rate. Entry forms and all the rules are on our Web site: www.healthjournalism.org/contest.

For more information, you may contact contest co-chairs Charles Ornstein at Charles.Ornstein@latimes.com or Julie Appleby at jappleby@usatoday.com.
