Money, Power and Respect narrated slide show

Fantastic narrated slide show about victimless drug and drug-related crimes from documentary photographer Brenda Ann Kenneally. Winner of NPPA's Best Use of the Web Best of Photojournalism Award for 2006.

Judge's Comments:

After reviewing the enormous amount of multimedia story entries in this competition over the past 6 days, it finally came time to select a single entrant for Best Use of the Web. In the beginning of our discussion and nominations for the Best Use, three of the four judges nominated “Money, Power & Respect” by Brenda Ann Kenneally. The discussion revolved obviously around the other potential nominee, “A Final Salute” from the Rocky Mountain News. By the end of the discussion, it was unanimous.

“Money, Power & Respect”, just as “A Final Salute,” was very powerful, compelling and emotional photojournalism and visual storytelling. Both demonstrated amazing access and trust with the subjects of their stories. And both displayed the pieces in an elegant and easy-to-use interface that allowed the user to get into the story quickly without extremely long downloads or cumbersome navigation. And both obviously told their stories through some of the most moving and gripping photo in the entire competition.

But what advanced “Money, Power & Respect” to the Best was, alongside its emotionally writ photography, the fact that the package appropriately linked to the 'Big Trigg' package, also by Brenda Ann Kenneally, which pushed the envelope for video, still photo and audio integration. The two were so seamless that I felt I had just witnessed the future of journalism on the web.

In addition, this package also celebrates the definition of the category…advancing the best use of online technology. And one of the best uses on the web is that anyone can be a publisher. If you have a great and important story to tell, you no longer need to submit it through a news organization or a publisher in order to get work like this in front of people. By working with a small multimedia team, you can get the story out where people can see and experience it.
