Readers Can Tell The Times's Frugal Traveler Where to Go...

NYTimes.com is bringing back the Frugal Traveler, and now readers can tell him where to go on his cross country road trip, which will be tracked via GPS and automatically plotted on a Google Map. The Frugal Traveler will start his adventure today.

In 2006, The Times sent Matt Gross – the Frugal Traveler – around the world on a limited budget. His three-month journey featured weekly Web-only reports, reader comments and suggestions and a Google map of his travels. At the completion of his trip, a three-page summary was published as the cover story of the print Travel section.

This year, The Times will be sending Matt around the United States for a twelve-week road trip. He will buy a car for the trip, circumnavigate the country using only back roads and sell it upon its conclusion. He will be filing weekly articles, frequent photos, and possibly video reports from the road. Readers will again have the opportunity to comment on and suggest destinations for his trip.

One addition this year is that Matt’s entire drive will be tracked using GPS, with his exact route plotted regularly on a Google map that includes location-specific links to associated content. This map will be presented in such a way that all users will be able to easily follow his journey.
