CBC, Washington Post, Slate partner with Facebook
CBCNews.ca, washingtonpost.com and Slate have partnered with the popular social network website Facebook.com in the past two weeks for a few different projects.
CBC News launched an experiment in civic engagement in partnership with Facebook, called the Great Canadian Wish List -- the first time that Facebook has partnered with a major broadcaster. Canadians are being asked to share their ideas and dreams for the future of Canada on a Facebook group designed specifically for this project. These ‘wishes’ will be catalogued and counted as other Facebook members read in, support them or submit their own wishes. CBC journalists will interact with Facebook users to generate stories for broadcast on CBC Radio, TV and CBC.ca. As part of CBC’s Canada Day coverage, CBC News will take the top ideas supported by Canadians across the country and generate “The Great Canadian Wish List.” CBC will have its own ‘Wish’ list web page — at cbc.ca/wish — where users can follow the discussions through a CBC blog.
washingtonpost.com's "The Compass" allows users to answer several questions that serve to determine where along the political spectrum their views fall. The results are then shared with the person's Facebook network and they, in turn, are invited to answer. As the user's network responds to the questions, s/he is able to see how their answers compare to create a
map of political ideology.
Slate's "Political Futures" application allows users to choose where they would place a bet if they had $500 to wager on the outcome of the 2008 race for the White House. Leveraging Slate's "Political Futures" tool, which databases the big three political prediction markets, the application shows where the pretend wager falls in relation to real bets and maps out how other people in a user's network placed their "bets."
