A citizen journalism progress report
Dan Gillmor has written up a great "state of the union" for citizen journalism, based on his keynote at last months OhmyNews International Citizen Reporters Forum in Seoul. He covers the high points of citizen journalism in the past year -- including the proliferation of new tools, recognition from the public and mainstream media, and exciting experimentation -- as well as the challenges ahead. Gillmor concludes with two sets of guiding principles, one for the public consuming journalism and one for the (same) public producing it.
"What becomes increasingly clear is the need to update media literacy for a media-saturated age. When people are creators of media, not just consumers, the task is more complex but more important than ever," Gillmor writes.
