'My Canada:' Census snapshots from across a nation
For a national census release in Canada], The Globe and Mail presented the data through an online multimedia package profiling "average" citizens in eight places called St. John's across the country. The approach puts a face, and voice, to the statistical snapshots provided by the Census. For example, the gender imbalance in the British Columbia oil boom town of Fort St. John:
"When Darlene Hamre arrived in Fort St. John 28 years ago, there were about 12 men for every lucky, choosy woman. Now, she laments, its a mere five or six. 'It was great. You were picky,' Ms. Hamre says. 'I dont think I ever picked a tab up. I like being treated like a lady. Im kinda liking being spoiled.'
