Sacramento Bee: Tackling Life

The Sacramento Bee's Tackling Life project traces the histories of five PeeWee football players from the poor side of town.

Rick Rodriguez, executive editor, says:

Tackling Life" is a different kind of story that we are telling in a different way. Reporter Jocelyn Wiener tracked down 31 of 35 team members from the 1992 Raiders Junior Midgets football squad to find out how they had fared in life. She constructed the stories in a narrative style relying on extensive interviews with the players, their coaches, family and friends as well as police, professors and public records. She watched videos of games and a funeral, and spent time digging through cardboard boxes in the head coach's garage, filled with Raiders' rosters, statistics and handwritten notes.
