A Calif. inventor has withdrawn a patent infringement lawsuit he filed against a dozen small newspapers, in which he alleged they violated patented technology that allows Web sites to display an abstract of a story with a link to the full story. A few papers named in the suit have since settled. Greg Schermer, an attorney for Lee Enterprises Inc. (which half-owns one of the sued papers) told Editor & Publisher a patent law firm hired by Lee concluded Heckel’s claim was unfounded.
