Old-time radio reporter learns new tricks, new clicks

Longtime NPR reporter Howard Berkes is a master at painting pictures with his voice. But for a story on a man who photographs rural scenes, he turned to the web to tell the story with multimedia. Poynter's Al Tompkins has a nice Q&A with Berkes explaining how and why he used the web for the story, and how he had to think differently to make it happen.

"While the slideshow works on its own (I wrote it as a self-contained story, selecting images and interview audio that fit together, and writing narration to make it all work), and the radio piece works on its own, each is greatly enhanced by the other," Berkes says. "And since I wrote both, I don't mind if some are attracted to one more than the other."

Copy Editors: The Missing Link in the Online Newsroom

Copy editors at the annual ACES conference wondered about their roles in the online newsroom, Poynter reports.

Chris Wienandt, ACES president and business copy-desk chief at The Dallas Morning News, said he thinks leaving copy editors out of the process reflects an online model in its infancy.

"We're disrespecting online readers by not giving them the same level of editing," he said. "I think people expect a newspaper site to be an extension of the newspaper, so I think the quality of the editing and thoroughness of the editing on the Web site should match the thoroughness of the editing that you get in the newspaper."
