Slate recently published a slide show about lap dancing, based on Juliana Beasley’s new illustrated “Lapdancer” book. Rather than censor the explicit photos, which were a key part of the story, Slate opted to warn readers that “the slide show contains explicit images and text” before they clicked and saw the graphic images. This is a good example of how the Internet can enable publications to publish images they might otherwise hestitate to.
Newspaper that are wary about publishing photos that might offend some readers might consider publishing them online with a warning, so that readers can make their own choices on what they’re willing to see and the publication doesn’t have to hold back images that may inform.
