We are opposed to the new pledge for children that the government has suggested.

Ignoring the almighty God, who is the Creator and Sustainer of life is spiritual suicide. Venerating man and the systems devised by men is idolatry. It is one of the sins that God will severely punish. Because sin (disobeying God’s commands) is committed against the eternal God, it deserves eternal punishment.

Taking the warning that God gave to him seriously, Noah built an ark that was capable of saving land animals and his family from the global, world-wide flood. This ark was capable of withstanding the turbulent conditions that prevailed after God opened the fountains of the great deep and the flood-gates of heaven. Ever wondered where the fossil record comes from? It is plants, animals and humans (yes, also the ‘Cradle of Humankind’) – all instantly buried alive under huge volumes of mud and volcanic lava. A complete fossil (like the specimens that were dug up) cannot be formed over a long period of time – it will simply rot away.

You may ask why God sent this flood. His word is very clear that it was because He saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. The people who perished in the flood are in prison, forever being punished with the flame that is not quenched and the worm that does not stop eating.

We live in times in which the actions of criminals closely resemble that of the people in Noah’s time. After the floodwaters receded, God promised that He will not again sent a flood. However, He has warned that the earth will again be destroyed. Not by water, but through fire. The day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are in it shall be burned up.

There is only one person who can save men and women and children from eternal punishment – the Lord Jesus Christ. The reason why only He qualifies as Saviour from sin is because He is the eternal Son (exact image) of God.

He became man with the main purpose to be punished on Calvary’s cross on behalf of the people whom He came to save. Only the eternal Son of God could absorb the eternal punishment on behalf of His people. By repenting of sins and believing in Jesus Christ, people can escape the judgment of God, which is imminent.

Any government has a huge responsibility to serve the people of the land they govern. The word ‘minister’ actually means servant (one who executes the commands of another, especially of a master). History has proved that when rulers acknowledge and obey the God of the universe, the land they govern spiritually thrives, which leads to high moral standards and low crime rates. When these conditions prevail, the people of the land rejoice. Alas, news reports of the day gives reason for the citizens of our beloved country to mourn and loose respect for the government.

We, the citizens of South Africa make an appeal to the conscience of government leaders to act responsibly and take the only God at His word. We suggest a creed which will instil in young people a desire to know the God who created them – the God who is good and does good.

    PROPOSED PLEDGE:

We, the youth of South Africa, recognising that God has given us a beautiful country, honour Him by committing ourselves to show our gratitude for all His gifts.

We promise to work hard and to strive to become good citizens of our country, using our gifts and talents to honour God and serve other people by displaying the characteristics of diligence, integrity and self-control. We will not lie, steal or cheat. Neither will we tolerate amongst ourselves anyone who does.

We sincerely declare that we will uphold the Law of God as expressed in the Ten Commandments and summarized by our Lord Jesus Christ as loving God and loving our neighbour, and that we will try to the best of our ability, and with the help of our Lord and Saviour, to live in accordance with these standards.

We will do our best to care for all of God’s creatures and to improve our environment.
