The Center for Public Integrity continues racking up awards for online journalism, winning the IRE award this year for “The Water Barons.” ?The Water Barons? is a sweeping, worldwide look at an issue that is rapidly escalating in the United States and elsewhere throughout the world,” the judges said. “The graphic findings ? outbreaks of disease, unaffordable drinking water, lack of oversight ? paints a picture of what can happen when water policies go awry. This series could become a coverage blueprint for years to come.”
CPI’s “Well Connected: A report on the frequent travels of the FCC and other telecommunications issues,” was a finalist. “Well Connected” won a 2003 Online Journalism Award from the Online News Association and USC. “These journalists wrenched eight years of hard-copy travel data out of a reluctant FCC and turned it into an online database showing which trips each commissioner took and who paid for them,” the judges wrote. “This classic investigative-reporting project dredged up facts that led the FCC to change its policies on accepting free travel.”
