Time Magazine archives to go online

Hewlett-Packard Co. is going to create a digital archive containing every issue of Time magazine published, which Time will then make freely available to subscribers on its Web site. HP said the digital archive would total more than 4,000 issues from 1923 to the present and be available in May.

Has Time Magazine went online with archives yet and how do I find the address? I am searching for an article from approximately 1953. Any suggestions as to how to go about this?

    Thanks,
    Rhonda

Rhonda: The Time Magazine archives have been online in part since the first (most recent) issues were posted in 1994. The magazine was not willing to pay for digitizing the full archives of more than 4,000 issues until now. It ain’t cheap. Currently articles since 1985 can be accessed if you are a subscriber. Soon all issues will be available if you subscribe.

Rhonda: You should be able to find the magazine you’re looking for at your local public library.

It is good to be businesslike which TIME magazine is. But is is not so good to delude the readers. I subscribed to the print magazine, first when i was in africa and then in india on the hope that i will also have access to its online editions, including its premium articles. it promised when they took the subscriptions. but later i found the access to premium articles was only meant for the US readers – not for the European edition ( which i got in africa) nor for the asian edition ( which i now get in India). this discrimination is not fair. at least other magazines like the economists dont do it. if you subscribe to it you can acces all its articles world over. Only recently the TIME asia distributors woke up to it when i wrote a strong letter and gave me a password by which i can access premium articles and the archive. but that seems to be a temporary arrangement in the TIMEAsia website – not the orginal TIME site. I think TIME has money enough – and doing good business – to be an international magazine in the true sense.

Can anyone locate a statement on the TIME archive that describes exactly what is and is not included in the archive? The archive is definitely not a facsimile of the original text. Headlines are different, articles are excluded. But a user is not given a clear indication that this is the casse…

I remember reading what was read at the cremation of Indira Ghandi (death Oct. 31, 1984) and I wanted to have it read at my memorial service. Can you look it up and send it to me or tell me how I can find it ?
