A company called Treeless Systems is working to produce a flexible computer system equipped with a screen that can be folded or rolled up like a broadsheet newspaper. The product will use a reflective display — similar to liquid crystal — that doesn’t require backlighting, The Denver Business Journal reported recently.
“What we are designing is a system that looks like a newspaper — with headlines, advertisements, etc. — presented in a treeless display that can be read anywhere,” Treeless Systems CEO Dave Lester said.
Lester said the low-power unit can be charged overnight. Instead of receiving their newspapers on the front porch, subscribers would pick up their publications through a wireless connection that transmits a file similar to a PDF….
Treeless System’s product would allow readers to customize their newspapers in ways print newspapers can’t, such as readers selectively subscribing to different sections of the newspaper — such as sports and business .
The device also could convert text to speech, allowing subscribers to hear the newspapers through a car stereo. Readers with vision problems could use the system to enlarge text and read more easily. The technology also would allow readers to view live-action video footage through the display — a concept that’s impossible with newsprint.
Treeless Systems hopes to bring the product to the market in the next three years.
