WeatherBug Launches Network of Backyard Citizen Weather Reporters
Backyard Network to Bolster WeatherBug Data and Forecasts, Reporting First-Hand Accounts of Local Severe Weather Events via WeatherBug Online Properties and Community Blogs
Gaithersburg, MD – WeatherBug, the leading provider of weather information services, today announced the formation of a nationwide network of ?weather reporters? who will collect, report and share weather information from their own WeatherBug Backyard Tracking Stations. The WeatherBug Backyard Network is open to all current and future owners of the consumer-grade WeatherBug Backyard Tracking Stations.
WeatherBug Backyard Tracking Stations empower weather enthusiasts to get their name on the map and have their tracking stations’ data seen by millions of users via the WeatherBug application. As part of this program, a blog entitled the WeatherBug Backyard Club was launched (http://blog.weatherbug.com/backyard). This blog offers WeatherBug Backyard Tracking Station owners a unique community within which to share their love of weather and interact with fellow weather enthusiasts. In addition, they can register to become Backyard Weather Reporters. These individuals will blog and post photos on weather in their area during times of severe weather, as well as for everyday outdoor activities, such as gardening, exercise, boating and more.
The line of personal weather stations, introduced in November 2004, streams live weather data from an individual’s backyard to their personal computer via the WeatherBug desktop application. With this new release, users are able to share the data from their stations with all WeatherBug users via the new Backyard Network tab found under US Weather, within both WeatherBug and WeatherBug Plus, the ad-free version.
?At WeatherBug, we believe our users are some of our best resources when it comes to the most localized weather information. They are right there ? experiencing it as it happens. Now with the launch of the WeatherBug Backyard Network and the Backyard Club, we are empowering our customers to become citizen weather reporters and help us compile the most up-to-date, locally relevant weather information available from any source,? said John Saaty , senior vice president and chief marketing officer, WeatherBug. ?With this new program, we are taking WeatherBug’s personal relevance and community to the next level.?
With the launch of the WeatherBug Backyard Network, participants can now make their hyper-local weather information available to 18 million unique WeatherBug users each month. WeatherBug users can opt to view weather from the WeatherBug Backyard Network or data from one of the 8,000 professional grade WeatherBug Tracking Stations placed at schools, public safety facilities and television stations around the US . The WeatherBug Backyard Tracking Stations range from $499 to $899 depending on model features, and are available for purchase today at www.weatherbugbackyard.com.
