Wired News: Suicide 101

Julia Scheeres’ series on suicide for Wired News has now been a finalist for two major awards, the 2003 Online Journalism Awards and now the 2003 IRE awards. Her series investigated alt.suicide.holiday, an online newsgroup focused on depression and suicide, and revealed that almost two dozen group participants who posted messages saying they were on the verge of suicide were encouraged to take their own lives by other group members. Scheeres writes about several former group members who committed suicide and includes excerpts from their online writings and videos.
